You're having coffee with a friend who runs a startup. He tells you that his team now ships features twice as fast using AI. He's genuinely excited. That evening you bring it up on a call with your developers. "We tried it. Spent more time cleaning up after the AI than writing the code ourselves." You clearly hear that they're not impressed.

So which side is right? Here's the thing. They both are. They're just describing completely different moments in a space that moves faster than most people realize. And that matters, because you're the one making decisions about hiring, timelines, and where to spend money on tools.

The "AI coding debate" isn't really a debate. It's people talking about different eras and different workflows as if they were the same thing.

The Five Camps

When I talk to engineering teams and founders, I keep running into the same archetypes and each has a completely different experience with AI coding.

First, the Skeptic. Usually a seasoned software developer. They tried AI coding tools a year ago or more. The output was brittle, buggy, and required so much cleanup that it was faster for them to write the code themselves. So they moved on. Their conclusion was completely reasonable for that era. For them, this is not hype. It's a piece of technology that actually works now.

Next, the Copy-Paster. They use AI through a chat window, copying code in and out. It helps sometimes, especially with unfamiliar technologies. But they're using it like a search engine, not like something that can write dozens of files a day for them.

Close to this group is the Budget User. They're on the cheapest subscription available and constantly hit token limits. They spend more time thinking about what to ask than actually building features. The results are decent, but the friction is real. They often wonder what the fuss is about.

And finally, there are founders building products almost entirely with AI. No engineering team, no code reviews, just a big idea and a premium subscription. They ship fast and the results can be genuinely impressive. But nobody is checking what's underneath. It works today. Whether it holds up six months from now is a different question.

Here's what matters if you're the one making technology decisions for your company. These five people will give you five completely different answers to "should we invest in AI for development?" None of them are lying. They're using different tools, from different time periods, with different workflows. You simply cannot compare their experiences as if they tried the same thing.

What Actually Changed?

So Now What?

This shift has real implications for the decisions you're making right now.

Start with hiring. The mix of skills you need is changing. You may need fewer people writing code from scratch but more experienced engineers reviewing and directing AI. Architecture and code review matter more than ever, not less. One senior engineer who can evaluate AI-generated code is more valuable than three juniors writing boilerplate. If your hiring plan was set six months ago, it may need revisiting.

Then consider timelines. Projects that took three months might take six weeks, but only if your team is using current tools with the right workflows. Teams stuck in the copy and paste camp won't see the speedup. The gap between well equipped teams and everyone else is widening fast, and that gap affects your competitive position.

There's also the question of technical debt. AI-generated code ships faster, but it can accumulate hidden quality issues. Verbose logic, duplicated patterns, shallow edge case handling. Think about tool investment. The difference between twenty dollars a month and over a hundred dollars a month isn't vanity. It changes what's possible. And perhaps most importantly, your team's opinion has an expiration date. Whatever your senior developer told you about AI coding in mid 2025 may already be outdated. This space moves in quarters, not years. Decisions made on stale information carry real cost.

What to Ask Your Team?

  2. Do we use tools like Cursor, Codex, or Claude Code? If not, what are the real reasons? If yes, what does the process look like and how do we check the results?

  3. What would change about our next quarter's roadmap if AI tools cut implementation time by forty percent? This question forces your team to think about strategic impact, not just tool preferences.

  4. Do we have someone who stays current on this? This is changing fast enough that someone needs to own it. Evaluating new tools. Updating workflows. Translating what's possible into what your business should actually do.

The Bottom Line

The AI coding debate isn't really a debate. It's people describing different eras and different workflows as if they shared the same experience. They don't.

The pace of change means your team's perspective has a shelf life measured in months, not years. Having someone who can cut through the noise, evaluate what's real, and translate it into your roadmap and hiring plan. That's the difference between riding this wave and watching it from shore.
